NB -  BELOW, LAST WEEK'S START SHEET

Pete Armstrong explains HOW IT WORKS?

1.         Put you name down the week before.

2.          Or in the shop in person or on the phone as soon as you know you want to play.

3.         Your  Tee Times will be available both in the shop and on line each Wednesday.

4.         Turn up on the day but there are limited places (a slot after each third tee-time for four (4) players to slot in.

5.          This slot will be on a first come basis i.e. first four names signed in. (  signed in  being the major words)

6.         Where a singleton turns up for the open slots these will covered by one person from the previous group and one from the following group. These slots are indicated on the start sheet. Two people turn up and just one nominated player drops in.

7.         We will be trialling this and making the amendments as necessary over the coming weeks.

8.         Commonsense will have to prevail where people don’t turn up! The groups either side of that affected group to equalise numbers.

9.         Later Tee-Times will allow earlier starters to slot in on the 10th.

10.     Last cards out  9.00am may be later during the winter months.

11.     Be ready to play at all times, pick up, putt on, press on, mark your cards after moving away etc.

12.     One person in each group will be asked to encourage his group to keep moving. (these will be indicated on the start sheet)

A MESSAGE TO THE REGULAR READERS

OF THIS SENIORS' NEWS PAGE

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE RUNNING NEWS PAGE APPEARS BELOW.   SO, PLEASE SCROLL TO THE SECTION BENEATH THE WEEKLY THURSDAY "DRAW."  THANK YOU.

PLEASE NOTE A TRIAL:

A NEW FORMAT FOR THURSDAY ROLL-UPS, AS A TRIAL,

FROM 8TH OCTOBER 2018

Trial for Thursday morning Seniors

The Tee will be reserved until 9am for Seniors Roll-Up

This goes against Sudbrook Moor's policy of having the Tee open at all times so anyone can just turn up and play but we think this will make things better for all concerned early on Thursday mornings.

The Senior News page below is managed and provided by Judith Hutton

On Thursday 8th November 2018 the 1st Tee will be reserved for the Seniors until 9am. There will be a timed Starting Sheet and Seniors who are unaware of this and want to be included, please contact the Golf Shop between 8am and 5pm from today. 01/11/2018 ( 01400 250111 )

This an experiment to make better use of the 1st Tee on Thursdays mornings and a more efficient flow around the course. If it is successful, it will become the norm.

This is going against our normal policy of having the 1st Tee open at all times ( golfers can just turn up and play any time ) but we think it will be better for all concerned on Thursday mornings.

THE NEW SUMMER ECLECTIC STARTED ON THURSDAY 5TH APRIL.

FINAL RESULT OF THE 2017-2018 WINTER ECLECTIC

Many congratulations, Nigel Corby, winner of the Seniors’ Winter 6 month Eclectic, in his third season as a senior golfer. From one shot behind, two birdies changed the prospects and brought about a leapfrogging of the leaders in the penultimate competition of the season.  Slotting in single putts on the 145 yard 16th and the 347 yard 18th, reduced Nigel’s running total by the vital 2 shots, to take the lead, and no one was able to catch him in last Thursday’s closing stableford.  The final 6 month scoreboard shows Nigel’s best scores over the 18 holes as 6 gross birdies and 3 pars on the front 9 holes followed by 6 gross birdies and 3 pars homeward.  Nigel’s challenge each season is borne out as the lowest handicap player of the senior turn-out, a 7 handicap player, to beat the higher handicaps.  Commiserations to Chris Wilmot, playing off 20, to lose the lead at the end of his best ever season, when he had had one hand on the trophy.  3rd place went to Pete Armstrong, playing off 18, and then, Mike Carelton, who had led for 3 months in the early part of the winter.  Tony Rose leapt from 7th place with his one shot improvement in the penultimate event, and that score brought him to equal 2nd score overall, and 5th on the necessary Back Nine Countback.  Last season’s title holder, Tim Newbery, and Simon Gray finished 6th and 7th, with Simon recording his best result since retiring from work and joining the seniors last year.  Well played too Barry Rohland, Ken Wingad, John Morley, David Guy, Phil Hall and John Came, many of whom have also enjoyed their best seasons.

SENIORS' PRACTICE MATCH - 9TH APRIL

Tuning up a month before the League Inter-Club Matchplay starts, the Seniors met this week for a practice encounter, playing amongst themselves.  Drawn teams of 4Ball pairings, under the experienced eye of Senior Captain Mick Massingham, played from the Championship tees. The final score was a very convincing win for Team B,  4 - 1, against Team A.  Winning partnerships were Nigel Corby and Graham Mackinder whose final putt on the 18th green, brought home a 1 Up victory against Pete Farmer and Bob Watson.  Roy Nelson and David Guy won 2 and 1 in a match that went to the 17th green, against new pairing Melvyn Claricoats and Dick Marshall.  Tim Newbery and Barry Rohland resumed a highly successful partnership from the 2017 season, to win 3 and 1 against the very experienced John Chatburn and Steve Squires, who themselves have enjoyed a history of successful League match results.  Trevor Whatton in partnership with Jim Carr found a point-winning niche in the final match to beat Captain Mick Massingham and Simon Gray. For Team A, despite giving ample strokes to the opponents, the point winning rookie pairing, Ian Nicholson and Chris Wilmot, had a super morning’s golf, bringing back a 4 and 2 victory against Ken Wingad and Colin Henfrey.

SENIOR NEWS DURING THE MONTH OF MARCH 2018

Thursdays in March have been either snowbound or wet, but tenacious Pete Farmer has added another achievement to his playing record.  After a score of 3-under CSS for the day, and a newly reduced handicap of 17.9, Pete explained, “I had on so many layers  and  my water-proofs, that I could hardly swing”.  Despite this, Pete described it as finding his winning form, wet through, as he triumphed in the March stableford, securing The Singleton Shield, one title Pete has not previously won since finding golf at the age of 67.  In very tough conditions Pete’s winning score of 41 is evidence of his energy and “can do” attitude.  He acknowledges the privilege of being so young at heart, with an active and fit regime.  The Thursday Seniors share the celebration of Pete’s trophy win, especially as 20 years ago a health scare could have looked like an end to golf.  Those who regularly play with him at first light know there’s a message in Pete’s attitude and performance, for those who want to keep on being active and involved.  Though Pete started that winning round with a double bogey, he went on to score on every hole, including a birdie 2 on the 15th  hole, to return a card of gross 80, quite an achievement to beat his age of 86 with his gross score.  This is what the golf world call an age-shooter; easier for the Professional world, but much harder for club amateurs when talking gross scores.  Pete is fuelled by the weekly challenge, a golden veteran, whose regular successes are a combination of his courage, talent, determination and focus.  Golf is his passion, behind his devotion to family and his newly acquired rescue pooch.  His family are immensely proud of him.  Pete has won most of the senior trophies, some of them several times over, and retains his place in the annual League Team, all of which records the best playing history of the club’s all-time octogenarians.  Pete’s handicap is fully genuine, turning out 50 weeks of the year, and always striving to play well enough to lower his handicap.  Long may Pete continue to keep his sparkle, remain vibrant and continue to inspire

Sudbrook Moor Seniors enjoyed a clean sweep and made a piece of history in this season's South Lincolnshire Seniors' League Captains' Day .  The team of 12's stableford  performance, captained by David Guy, resulted in 3-part triumph.  Competing for The Ken Crowe League Captain's Trophy, David Guy scored 34 points, beating Gedney Hill's Captain by one point.  RAF Coningsby finished 3rd, from Kirton Holme 4th, for Sudbrook Moor to take home the 1st of day's 3 trophies.  Sudbrook Moor's 85 year old star, Pete Farmer, contesting the Trevor Price Non-Captains' League title, hit his regular amazing form, off his handicap of 19, to return a scorecard of 45 points.  5 shots better than the day's CSS, Pete was cut to 17.8, and beat the field of nearly 70 seniors by 3 stableford points.  Gedney Hill came in 2nd, with 42 points, from Kirton Holme on 39, then RAF Coningsby.  Pete Farmer carried off the 2nd trophy.  The 3rd trophy of the day, for the best team of 12 aggregate score, was a clear run-away success for Sudbrook Moor.  Before play commenced, David Guy pre-selected his team of 12 who scored an average of 35 points apiece, totaling an end of play 421 points.   Gedney Hill came in 2nd, on 390, Kirton Holme on 388, and RAF Coningsby on 345.  Captain David was presented with the 3rd trophy, which is the first time all 3 titles have been won by the same club on that date in the League season's calendar.

NEW TO THE 2017 DIARY THURSDAY 27TH JULY

AN EXCITING NEW TROPHY,  THE FRIENDSHIP CUP, A BETTERBALL PAIRS' STABLEFORD.

The Senior Captain, David Guy, introduced to his year of office a new competition with a new trophy, adding to the Thursday calendar a popular and fresh change to the regular weekly singles format.  The Seniors' Friendship Cup challenged drawn pairs to a  Betterball Stableford and a very strong field contested the inaugural event, with many really interesting fresh partnerships.   It looked wide open to the hopeful 22 drawn pairings, but it was a scorecard without any turbulence that emerged as overall winners.  The mixed pairing of Committee man, Graham Mackinder with Sue Watson, had the edge over the field.  Their return of 45 points went to a countback, but it was their very healthy back 9 score of 25 points which proved to be the vital ingredient of the round to secure the title.  Runners-up were Phil Hall and Harry Cutmore, with 23 points on their homeward 9,.  Three pairings shared a result of 44 points.  Harry Cruickshank with Howard Firth had the best back 9 of 25 points, from John Costall with Bob Watson (22 back 9) and Simon Grey with John Ronan (19).  Simon Grey and John Ronan also enjoyed the best front 9 score of 25 points.  Many new friendships were made on the day and that is a celebration of a hugely successful innovation of the annual competition.  Captain David presented Graham and Sue with the trophy at his Presentation Ceremony on the occasion of his Captain's Morning.

2017 Just to remind you that the Members Daily Green Fee for June and July is £5 (back to £4 August to December). In response to Members saying that they would prefer whole numbers when getting their Green Fee Ticket, we reduced March to £3, increased April to £4 and for June and July £5. We hope you understand that we have to make gradual increases as time goes by. Yearly Fees alter very little, so   we hope you see that an increase for the next 2 months represents only a small increase in the year taken as a whole. The golf course has never looked so good

The Golf Course is playing at its best - congratulations Jimbo Sergeant, on all your effort and expertise.
S ince Tuesday 6th June, there has been a Temporary Tee on the fourth hole, owing to the commencement of the massive project behind the 3rd green and the construction of a new path, and a wider and longer 4th tee. Around 200+ tonnes of soil have been imported, and, on Monday 12th June the 4th tee was completely re-turfed with BIG ROLL turf, grown by Simon Hutton's TILLERS' TURF at his Lincoln site.   For the June Monthly Medal on the 10th June,  the competition was still valid as a qualifier for Handicap purposes by siting the 3 sets of tees over the other 17 holes, at maximum length to cope with the reduction in length of the 4th hole..  Similar provision will be made for any competitions over the next days, until the newly turfed 4th tee is opened.  With BIG ROLL turf, it can usually be IN PLAY within 24 hours - specially grown for QUICK RECOVERY sites, such as football pitches, where play must be back to normal within hours of the job being completed !!!!  May we congratulate Simon Hutton and Jim Segeant, Tim Hutton Proprietor, and all the Team from FINETURF whi have united over the past days to get the job nearly completed.  WATCH OUT for the final tidying up process and the full aesthetics.
We are SO grateful to FINETURF for subsidising this project, which would normally be beyond the means of SUDBROOK MOOR GOLF CLUB.
