CREATING GOLFERS and BETTER GOLF

Trial for Thursday morning Seniors  The Tee will be reserved

THE "LAST CARDS OUT" RULE

 REMAINS AT   9.30am

This goes against Sudbrook Moor's policy of having the Tee open at all times so anyone can just turn up and play but we think this will make things better for all concerned early on Thursday mornings.

If Seniors take the opportunity to play as early as possible with a reserved tee time, this will not only give them a clear run at the first nine holes but returning to the 10th tee will result in a clearer back nine with fewer general players.

Continuing and refining Seniors having the 1st Tee Reserved until approximately 8.30am on Thursdays. (slightly later on dark winter mornings)

THE "LAST CARDS OUT" RULE

 REMAINS AT  9.30am

The aim being to make play more efficient on Thursday mornings in response to the oft cited complaint of "SLOW PLAY". Please note this is not to make people rush around the course, far from it, but to structure the starting to make best use of the time.
Also, players will be able to play in their normal groups for the most part. However, there is al
so the opportunity to play with different players. It is the intention to make it more of a Draw for partners on the first and third Thursdays of the month for the White Tee events.
The consensus at the moment is that it is working much better than the old "free for all" on the First Tee.
Thank you to Pete Armstrong for responding to this Tee Reservation offer from the Proprietors. Please continue to give him your feedback and support.

Ladies v Senior Gents

Tuesday 2nd April

Annual Greensomes Matchplay

The promise of a rain-soaked day for the annual matchplay between the Ladies and the Senior Gents had a dampening effect on the eventual turn-out.  For some, the cloud burst at the exact moment of the start was not an inviting prospect, while some were determined to make the journey to the club worthwhile.  There were no complaints amongst the adjusted ties, and four matches brought home the most convivial of results.   Lead match, Senior Vice-Captain Steve Squires and Past Captain Graham Mackinder went One Down to determined Amanda Roberts and Karren Dearlove.  Chris Wilmot and Clive Winters squeezed a One Up finish after a nip and tuck game with Sue Watson and Sheila Nelson.  A strong encounter between playing partners Sue Chambers and Sheila Cutmore finished One Up for the girls facing Senior Captain Mick Massingham and Club Treasurer Colin Henfrey.   In an adjustment to cope with the change in numbers of participants, a final singles match yielded Bryan Heydinger a One Up success against Chris Thompson, with the final putt turning Chris’ near half into Bryan’s appropriate win for the Gents, and thus a friendly 2 – 2 halved result for the record books.

MONDAY 18TH MARCH -

CAPTAIN'S TEAM VERSUS VICE-CAPTAIN'S TEAM

A WONDERFUL HALVED MATCH FOR MICK AND STEVE

RESULT :  4 -- 4

Tuning up before the Inter-Club League season gets underway, the Seniors have met for a practice 4ball betterball matchplay encounter.  In a friendly but highly competitive format of drawn pairings and ties, the Senior Captain’s team took on the Vice-Captain’s team. Under the experienced scrutiny of Captain Mick Massingham and Vice-Captain Steve Squires, the challenge was played from the Championship tees, as a means to the team selection for the Seniors’ first fixture. The final score was a very happy halved match, 4 - 4.  Winning partnerships were Steve Squires and Graham Mackinder, Nigel Corby and Dick Marshall, Barry Kay and Bob Watson, David Wainwright and Mike Carelton, Ted Johnson and Tim Newbery, Barry Rohland and Andy Milner, Stuart Minter and David Guy and John Chatburn and Chris Wilmot.  Six of the 8 matches went to either the 17th or 18th hole, suggesting much of the golf was of “a thriller” quality, as confirmed by the post-game discussions.  There had been an immensely positive atmosphere and the unanimous feeling that the experience had been both beneficial and hugely enjoyable.  Other seniors involved in the match – Pete Farmer, Pete Fallat, Frank Brumpton, John Costall, Trevor Whatton, Tony Rose, Roy Nelson, Colin Henfrey, Alan Cuthbertson, Sue Watson, Mick Massingham, Tony Davies, Mick Beasley and Harry Cutmore.

AND THANK YOU FOR RAISING A FURTHER £28-10, ON THE 18TH MARCH, FOR THE BABIES AT

THANK YOU ALL AGAIN.  A GREAT START TO MICK'S CHARITY FUND - THE NEO NATAL UNIT AT THE QMC NOTINGHAM

The HUGE cheque of £1284-20 was presented at the Seniors' AGM on MONDAY 14TH JANUARY - REPORTED BELOW -

The “Big Neonatal Appeal” of the Nottingham University Hospitals has benefited from the year-long support of the Sudbrook Moor Senior golfers.  The massive sum of £1,284.20 has accumulated from a small section of the club membership, with the steady drip of weekly donations, two bumper raffles, several fun challenges of “Beat Ben Hutton, the Professional” and generous individual gifts.  Charity representative, Neve Cairns, travelled from the University Hospital to receive the donation from Senior Captain, Mick Massingham, and his family members.  Mick’s daughter in law, Deborah, and grandson Alexander also visited the golf club to meet both Neve and the seniors, who had congregated for their January AGM.   Mum Deborah and baby Alexander were part of the cheque presentation, in gratitude to the Neonatal Unit having provided life-saving care at the start of Alexander’s life, just over a year ago.  Neve thanked the senior golfers for helping the 1500 babies who every year receive tailored care at Nottingham Hospital.  State of the art equipment, research and family support are all possible through these charity donations.  Extra hospital improvements are available for premature and sick babies, their parents and families, at times of difficulty and emotional suffering.  Senior Captain Mick thanked his fellow golfers for their magnificent support and will be remaining in office through 2019.  After only three weeks, Mick’s continued charity appeal has already got off to a sparkling start for Nottingham’s “Big Neonatal Appeal.”

THE NEW SUMMER ECLECTIC STARTED ON THURSDAY 5TH APRIL.

FINAL RESULT OF THE 2017-2018 WINTER ECLECTIC

Many congratulations, Nigel Corby, winner of the Seniors’ Winter 6 month Eclectic, in his third season as a senior golfer. From one shot behind, two birdies changed the prospects and brought about a leapfrogging of the leaders in the penultimate competition of the season.  Slotting in single putts on the 145 yard 16th and the 347 yard 18th, reduced Nigel’s running total by the vital 2 shots, to take the lead, and no one was able to catch him in last Thursday’s closing stableford.  The final 6 month scoreboard shows Nigel’s best scores over the 18 holes as 6 gross birdies and 3 pars on the front 9 holes followed by 6 gross birdies and 3 pars homeward.  Nigel’s challenge each season is borne out as the lowest handicap player of the senior turn-out, a 7 handicap player, to beat the higher handicaps.  Commiserations to Chris Wilmot, playing off 20, to lose the lead at the end of his best ever season, when he had had one hand on the trophy.  3rd place went to Pete Armstrong, playing off 18, and then, Mike Carelton, who had led for 3 months in the early part of the winter.  Tony Rose leapt from 7th place with his one shot improvement in the penultimate event, and that score brought him to equal 2nd score overall, and 5th on the necessary Back Nine Countback.  Last season’s title holder, Tim Newbery, and Simon Gray finished 6th and 7th, with Simon recording his best result since retiring from work and joining the seniors last year.  Well played too Barry Rohland, Ken Wingad, John Morley, David Guy, Phil Hall and John Came, many of whom have also enjoyed their best seasons.

SENIORS' PRACTICE MATCH - 9TH APRIL

Tuning up a month before the League Inter-Club Matchplay starts, the Seniors met this week for a practice encounter, playing amongst themselves.  Drawn teams of 4Ball pairings, under the experienced eye of Senior Captain Mick Massingham, played from the Championship tees. The final score was a very convincing win for Team B,  4 - 1, against Team A.  Winning partnerships were Nigel Corby and Graham Mackinder whose final putt on the 18th green, brought home a 1 Up victory against Pete Farmer and Bob Watson.  Roy Nelson and David Guy won 2 and 1 in a match that went to the 17th green, against new pairing Melvyn Claricoats and Dick Marshall.  Tim Newbery and Barry Rohland resumed a highly successful partnership from the 2017 season, to win 3 and 1 against the very experienced John Chatburn and Steve Squires, who themselves have enjoyed a history of successful League match results.  Trevor Whatton in partnership with Jim Carr found a point-winning niche in the final match to beat Captain Mick Massingham and Simon Gray. For Team A, despite giving ample strokes to the opponents, the point winning rookie pairing, Ian Nicholson and Chris Wilmot, had a super morning’s golf, bringing back a 4 and 2 victory against Ken Wingad and Colin Henfrey.

SENIOR NEWS DURING THE MONTH OF MARCH 2018

Thursdays in March have been either snowbound or wet, but tenacious Pete Farmer has added another achievement to his playing record.  After a score of 3-under CSS for the day, and a newly reduced handicap of 17.9, Pete explained, “I had on so many layers  and  my water-proofs, that I could hardly swing”.  Despite this, Pete described it as finding his winning form, wet through, as he triumphed in the March stableford, securing The Singleton Shield, one title Pete has not previously won since finding golf at the age of 67.  In very tough conditions Pete’s winning score of 41 is evidence of his energy and “can do” attitude.  He acknowledges the privilege of being so young at heart, with an active and fit regime.  The Thursday Seniors share the celebration of Pete’s trophy win, especially as 20 years ago a health scare could have looked like an end to golf.  Those who regularly play with him at first light know there’s a message in Pete’s attitude and performance, for those who want to keep on being active and involved.  Though Pete started that winning round with a double bogey, he went on to score on every hole, including a birdie 2 on the 15th  hole, to return a card of gross 80, quite an achievement to beat his age of 86 with his gross score.  This is what the golf world call an age-shooter; easier for the Professional world, but much harder for club amateurs when talking gross scores.  Pete is fuelled by the weekly challenge, a golden veteran, whose regular successes are a combination of his courage, talent, determination and focus.  Golf is his passion, behind his devotion to family and his newly acquired rescue pooch.  His family are immensely proud of him.  Pete has won most of the senior trophies, some of them several times over, and retains his place in the annual League Team, all of which records the best playing history of the club’s all-time octogenarians.  Pete’s handicap is fully genuine, turning out 50 weeks of the year, and always striving to play well enough to lower his handicap.  Long may Pete continue to keep his sparkle, remain vibrant and continue to inspire
